But I think science should not be guided by military funding and that scientist should have a say in regard to the application oft science. While I understand what you are saying, I...Thanks!

While I understand what you are saying, I personally don't think it is up to the scientists to act as the gatekeepers of knowledge. Maybe people cannot be trusted to make good, peaceful use of scientific knowledge, but how can we ever expect any societal advancement if only a select few have access to information?

You do raise a good point, and that is definitely an important ethical consideration.Dominiquehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17746917233982101417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5244733705456115387.post-23493115211345628832014-11-16T09:38:21.187-08:002014-11-16T09:38:21.187-08:00A well written post. Your a much better with words...A well written post. Your a much better with words than I am.

On the other hand noted the mathematician Norbert Wiener:

"Die Erfahrung der Wissenschaftler, die an der Atombombe gearbeitet haben, zeigt, daß am Ende der Wissenschaftler unbeschränkte Macht in die Hände der Menschen legt, denen er sie am wenigsten anvertrauen möchte"

Badly translated and slightly changed: The experience of the scientists who worked on the atomic bomb, shows, that at the end scientists placed unlimited power into the hands of the people, which cannot be trusted, to make peaceful use of the scientific knowledge.

I think we need to look beyond the problem of open access. It is the question of turning scientific knowledge into a (atomic, surveillance, robot) weapon or use the knowledge for a better and peaceful future. Often we simply don´t know for sure how the use of new scientific knowledge will impact our society in the future (e.g. fracturing, genetic modifications, climate engineering) .
